Business Getting Down on the Dance Floor

There have been countless articles written lately debating whether or not the job market has bounced back. But, is the business world really getting back on its feet, or is it going to take more than a few years for the job market to recover?

A recent article in the Wall Street Journal claims “more companies are wanting to dance.”  So who has the best moves?

Financial services companies and consulting firms seem to be the liveliest dancers in the job market. Hiring rates are getting close to their pre-recession levels at firms like Bain & Co. and Accenture PLC. In fact, Bain & Co. claims things are looking so good that it is now hiring more people than it did before the recession, due to a growing demand for services. Accenture has even hired a whopping 64,000 new employees, which is a record compared to the companies 25,000 new hires in 2008.

Providing context and corroboration for the WSJ article, the Graduate Management Admission Council announced that schools saw 39% more full-time job postings than they did last year. And

Analyzing Math Anxiety

Researchers at the Numerical Cognition Lab and the University of Chicago have been analyzing the causes of “math anxiety”.  This is a situation familiar to many K-12 students, who seem to freeze when they see a math problem.  Their research shows that the anxiety of math teachers and parents can rub off on their students, ultimately affecting their learning.

Fortunately, proven classroom methods have also been tested to reduce students’ anxiety of doing mathematics.  These tips include:

  • Focus on learning the process behind math concepts, rather than merely trying to get a right answer.
  • Similarly, don’t refer to the textbook’s answer key very often.  Instead, value the problem and have students arrive at their own answers.
  • Encourage every student to work on the problem on paper.  Thi

Baddour stepping down as UNC athletic director

A day after firing football coach Butch Davis, North Carolina also will start searching for a new athletic director.

Dick Baddour said Thursday he plans to step down after 14 years as soon as the school can hire a replacement. Entering the final year of a three-year contract that expires next June, Baddour said it’s important for his successor to name the next football coach instead of inheriting a hire.

“It is my responsibility to do what is in the best interest of the program, and this is my decision,” Baddour said in a news conference to discuss Davis’ firing a day earlier.

Chancellor Holden Thorp said Baddour will attend the school’s hearing before the NCAA infractions committee in October, then serve out the rest of his contract in another position. Baddour took over in 1997 after John Swofford left to become commissioner of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Baddour’s sooner-than-expected departure is the latest development in a bumpy year for the Tar Heels.

Oklahoma admits 2 major violations in men’s hoops

Oklahoma has asked the NCAA to place its men’s basketball program on two more years of probation and vacate all wins from the 2009-10 season for two major rules violations by former assistant coach Oronde Taliaferro.

The university and NCAA investigators released a summary report Thursday proposing penalties for the infractions committee to consider. Athletic department spokesman Kenny Mossman said that process should take several weeks and Oklahoma will not comment until the process is resolved.

The Sooners also proposed taking away one scholarship, two official visits and 10 in-person recruiting days during the upcoming academic year as penalties for the violations committed while the program was already on probation.

Taliaferro resigned last year after the investigation started.

Scouting Guru Q&A with Tracy McFate, head of football assigners, and much, much more

The Scouting Guru has been all over the San Gabriel Valley and beyond, and like always, he’s offered to share his thoughts, free of charge. Don’t hate, enjoy it for what it’s worth, which is one man’s opinion on the talent in the San Gabriel Valley.

Guru Writes: When I started to get ideas for what to write this week, I was stumbling a bit. You can only talk college recruiting so much. I wanted to do something that was going to be beneficial to coaches, players and parents. And then it hit me like a sack of bricks.
As we all know football officiating is one of the thankless jobs of the year. You get criticized and yelled at and the stipend are anywhere from $60 to $80. So for this column I wanted to know what the points of emphasis is going to be for the upcoming season and other things. There is one man I know I could call on… Tracy McFate.
