Johnston’s DeNoncour named recipient of Alice Sullivan Memorial Scholarship
Prior to today’s Division II softball playoffs at Rhode Island College, RIIL director of softball Betty Marquis introduced Johnston’s Alaina DeNoncour as the 2011 recipient of the Alice Sullivan Memorial Scholarship.
A teacher and administrator at East Providence High School, the late Alice Sullivan also served as the assistant Executive Director of the Rhode Island Interscholastic League, working tirelessly to provide athletic opportunities for girls in Rhode Island right up until her passing in November 2003 at the age of 78.
Upon her death, a foundation and scholarship was created in Sullivan’s name to ensure that her legacy lives on. The Alice Sullivan Scholarship Committee has decided that Alaina DeNoncour of Johnston High School best exemplifies what Sullivan stood for, selecting her as this year’s scholarship recipient.

I was bothered, however, by the way the expert NRC panel judged these results. “Test-based incentive programs, as designed and implemented in the programs that have been carefully studied, have not increased student achievement enough to bring the United States close to the levels of the highest achieving countries.”
Uh … well … sure. But is that a useful measure of progress? We haven’t brought lasting peace to the Middle East or democracy to China, but life has improved for many people in those regions. Is there some
